Leah opens your mind and ears to distinctive musicians globally! From signed to unsigned, from obscure towns to big cities. This column catches music that was missed by mainstream media. So go ahead, pick up your headphones and discover a new world of music.

100 Monkeys

Rock, Soul, Blues Unsigned (USA)

100 Monkeys is an outlandish band from sunny California. Their music, a mixture between rock and soul, provides preposterous lyrics like I will kill you in your sleep so you better try and keep awake. Their dark, quirky, sense of humor is what makes this band one of a kind. Oh did I forget to mention the actor, who plays Jasper in Twilight, Jackson Rathbone, is in the band? Rathbone plays multiple instruments and lends his vocals to my favorite songs “Ugly Girl” and “Smoke.” The band is currently on tour.

Flunk

Electronic Signed (Norway)

Flunk started out as just an instrumental band but when signed to Beatservice (2000) they began to add vocals. What defines this band is front woman Anja Oyen Vister. Her unique, angelic voice compliments the outrageous mixture of their acoustic and electronic melodies. Flunk is that perfect, carefree driving music you tend to blast while you’re driving home with the windows down.

Lourdes from Buenos Aires was once famous for being in pop sensation, Bandana. After the bands break up, Lourdes immediately signed with EMI Music and produced her first solo album,Televisivamente, (2004). Her music touches on subjects like, media today and flirting with casual sex. Lourdes experiments with synthesizers and electric keyboards. Not only that, but her voice provides a distinct tone that is guaranteed to give you goose bumps! Her music is inspiring and captivating. Any prideful female should be rocking this on their iPod.
