Art Wynwood 2013 @ Midtown Miami

Miami has gone through a re-imagining period where it has become synonymous with art (also on the list: zombies, political corruption, sexy bods, etc.). The word “Art” how now been allocated and has prefaced a myriad of events where pieces, collections and 70 full-on galleries were on display at Art Wynwood in Miami for thousands of art aficionados on President’s Day weekend.

It’s a certain mix of casual and chic that go to events like these, but art can be appreciated and interpreted with all the different points of view.Art Wynwood reflects this, as the art being showcased ranges from abstract paints, tale-telling photos, expressive setups and puzzling sculptures. Artist Federico Uribe had his symmetrical sculptures displayed, which was titled “Pencilism: Sculptures” and inquisitive onlookers (including myself) were impressed by the seemingly complicated constructions.

Some main holdovers from last year’s Art MiamiQ showcase were also in attendance, such as Chul Hyun Ahn’s colorful mirror installations and visual artist Gregory Scott’s frame in frame videos.

Both were big hits so it makes sense to give them another viewing for this shortened set at Art Wynwood, which featured a little over half of its older counterpart.

One difference was the inclusion of works from Andy Warhol, most explicable being his Campbell Soup pieces.

To add to the nostalgic nature in this gallery were photos of Marilyn Monroe wrapped in her bed sheets and one of of a posing Deborah Harry. I noticed photos played a more prominent role, as galleries featured rustic buildings in Cuba, a collection of books, a gun with the encryption “Victory Loves Preparation,” among others.

One of the more…physical works was of a woman in tight, white body suit that had QR codes scattered throughout her body, remaining statuesque as people gathered around.

For those who did not go to Art Miami last year, Art Wynwood offered an almost “Best of” and a refresher for those former patrons.
