Lars and the Real Girl (2007)
Directed by Craig Gillespie
Lars Lindstrom (Ryan Gosling) is an awkward 27-year-old loner who spends most of his days trying to avoid contact with others. His brother and sister-in-law worry that something is wrong with him, until one day he finally gathers the courage to show up at their house with a date. However, his date is no ordinary girl. It’s a life-sized “love doll” named Bianca he ordered online. His brother (Paul Schneider) thinks he has gone insane, while his sister-in-law (Emily Mortimer) convinces everyone to play along with Lars’ delusion. Surprisingly, Bianca changes the whole town. From volunteering at day cares to getting a job as a fashion mannequin at the mall, Bianca touches the hearts of everyone. Lars even gets a little jealous that he has to share his “girlfriend” with the rest of the town.
Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn
Ryan Gosling plays a mysterious man who is not only a mechanic and stuntman, but also moonlights as a getaway driver. His life gets complicated when he falls for his neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), whose husband is serving time in prison. Unfortunately, their short-lived relationship ends abruptly when her husband, Standard (Oscar Isaac), is allowed to go home. Gosling’s character soon finds himself trying to pull off a daylight robbery with Standard in an effort to keep Irene and her son safe from the gangsters Standard was involved with in the past.
