UltraCon 2014 brought the fun and flair of comics, anime, and more to Fort Lauderdale. Combining everything from otaku culture, toy collecting, and pop-culture, attendees at UltraCon had plenty to enjoy for the weekend. And while the area where all the festivities took place was a bit on the smaller size, UltraCon of South Florida still provided a great experience for everyone that showed up Cosplayers, collectors, and enthusiast gathered at the Sheraton Suites for what proved to be a quality convention experience for everyone.

Various guests from all facets of pop-culture were in attendance on both days that UltraCon took place. Personalities like D.C Douglas, the popular voice actor of Wesker for Resident Evil, as well as Red Power Ranger Jason Faunt, brought excitement for fans. Yet, the guest list was not limited to solely actors, but stretched out to UFC fighters like Mike Rio and Marcus Brimage to spice things up. Rounding everything off were comic artist Jose Delbo and Mark Sparacio, as well as various independent artist and vendors such as Silverback Comics. The mixed bag of guests helped give a great sense of variety and dynamic offerings for attendees looking for a unique convention experience to satisfy their weekend.

The Dealers Room was abundant with all kinds of collectibles and goodies ripe for the taking. Those looking for vintage 1980s toys, hard-to-find video games, or elaborate collectible statues were definitely not disappointed. On the other end of the area of UltraCon, attendees could sit in on various panels that took place through both days of the convention. The panels ranged from video game discussions and comic book lectures, to screenings of popular shows and photography tutorials. Yet the big attractions of the weekend were the two Costume Contests that took place and featured some of South Florida’s most amazing cosplayers. The grand prizes were both an Xbox One consoles and $200 in prize money to the winners of each contest. And while there were only two winners, there were a variety of costumes that deserved just as much attention.

While UltraCon took place in a relatively small area within the Sheraton Suites, it’s a prime example of a convention taking what is available and making everything work to the absolute fullest. Those who attended were greeted not only with a staff devoted to providing the best experience to attendees, but also a variety of attractions that held a strong momentum for the entire weekend. It will be very interesting to see just how much UltraCon will improve and evolve with each successive year this staff will host.
