You’re getting ready to go out, but realize you have no ride. Your smartphone is here to rescue you. Nowadays, there’s an app for anything from painting nails to booking a flight. Transportation apps are becoming the next big thing, especially among the younger crowd.

Uber, a modern and cheaper version of a taxi, is becoming popular among college kids. Once you download the app, it gives you the option to request a ride from an Uber TAXI, Uber X, Uber BLACK, or Uber SUV. The car options differ in price, quality, and convenience.

After choosing your destination, a private driver comes to your current location and takes you there. The best part: no cash is needed because you can pay with your phone, and even have the option to include tips. Uber is more common in touristic cities but nonetheless helps you get to wherever you’re going. It’s perfect for a night out on the town with your friends. If the party you just got to is a bummer, call up Uber and go to the next one. You never have to worry about a designated driver with Uber.  It’s perfect for you last minute needs. Just watch out for surge pricing.

Another application that provides transportation is called Lyft– coined from the word “lift.” Some say it’s cheaper than Uber but they also say it’s a little less convenient. It all depends on your destination and your current location. If you see a car around with a pink, fluffy moustache then you are looking at a Lyft driver.

People worry about the quality, safety, and affects of using applications like Uber and Lyft. The prices may be cheap for the consumers but that also means that drivers are underpaid. Some users have also experienced the inconvenience of having their driver cancel on them last minute or take them through longer routes and then charging them a large amount because they’re tourists. Whatever the case may be, be sure to only use those apps when you feel safe and when it’s most convenient for you.

If you’re not fully comfortable with a private driver, there is always public transportation. Using public transportation in your community can be cheaper, easier and useful for going places locally.

If you have an Apple device, check out the “explore” section in the App Store. The section shows you what is popular near you and usually consists of news stations as well as some sort of transit tracker that can help you locate a public city bus. You can use Google Maps as well to see which bus you need to take depending on where you want to go.

When the use of technology and the need for transportation combine, you get pretty cool applications that are handy and inexpensive. All you need is a smartphone and you could go anywhere.
