What: The Pixie Queen Tour
Who: Anthony Green, Mat Kerekes, Secret Space
Where: Culture Room
When: Friday, September 9
Armed with his instantly recognizable voice, Anthony Green is celebrating the release of his latest solo album, Pixie Queen, with a North American tour. Since 2008, Green’s solo career has stood out amongst his other work with Circa Survive and Saosin, delivering a folksy, backwoods feel that contrasts with his usual post-hardcore repertoire. The new album, set to officially release the same day as the South Florida show, can already be streamed here.
Similar to Green’s, Mat Kerekes’ solo work exists alongside that of his band Citizen. The gritty angst Kerekes puts into Citizen’s music is just a little softer in his own songs—he opts for acoustic guitars over distorted electrics. His new album, Luna & the Wild Blue Everything, grapples with change and actually features Anthony Green on “Direction,” so there may just be an onstage collab during the tour.
Traveling from Toledo, Ohio, Secret Space are a self-described “atmospheric alt-rock band.” They focus on feeling over technicality, using echoing guitars and whooshing cymbals to make an impact. Released on Equal Vision Records, their debut album, The Window Room, is an emo dream, weaving clean, slow riffs in between vulnerable lyrics.
With standing room only and no barricades, the Culture Room is the ideal informal space for more popular alternative artists like Green. For a sweet Friday retreat, consider this concert.
