The holidays are without a doubt the most magical time of the year. Everyone’s in the giving spirit, loved ones come home, and the mood is just right. And with cold weather looming and school in recess, there’s probably no better way to get in the spirit of the holidays than to curl up with a cup of hot chocolate and watch a good Christmas movie. Here are some must-watch titles that make for ideal holiday watches.

The Polar Express (2004)

A beautiful story about the power of believing, this Christmas film starring Tom Hanks takes you on a magical journey with a group of kids to the North Pole. The film focuses mainly on a young boy who initially has his doubts about St. Nick and all of the much talked about Christmas magic. The boy, along with other children who are chosen to come along, endure a wild ride on an amazing train called the Polar Express which takes them straight to Santa’s home, where they’ll witness Christmas magic first hand. It’s a wonderful and enchanting Christmas tale that children and grown-ups alike will fall in love with.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

This movie adaptation of Dr. Seuss children’s book is the perfect holiday watch for the whole family. Starring the always funny Jim Carey, as the Grinch, this story will make for a wonderfully whimsical Christmas experience. The tale centers on the small-hearted Grinch who has no Christmas spirit and intends to take away the holiday joy from the citizens of Whoville. Disguised as “Santy Claus” he sneaks into town on Christmas Eve and steals all of the Christmas things; however, his plan backfires as the citizens of Whoville end up teaching him a lesson about the real meaning of the holidays.

Home Alone (1990)

If you’re looking for a more family-friendly side splitter, then this Christmas classic is for you.  After his family has forgotten him and left for France, young Kevin McCallister finds himself in an empty house and assumes that his wish to have no family has come true. The story really takes an adventurous turn when two con men attempt to rob the house and Kevin must protect the house using his quick thinking and boobytrapping skills. A perfectly hilarious Christmas movie, Home Alone also serves as a reminder to appreciate what you have.

A Christmas Carol (2009)

This thrilling field trip through time with Ebenezer Scrooge is a lovely Christmas story and is a must watch during the holidays. Somewhere in London the old Scrooge is visited by three spirits on the Eve of Christmas and is taken to his past, present, and future. The journey is a final effort by the spirits to get the Scrooge to overcome his deep-seated bitterness and learn to forgive and enjoy life. It’s a story unlike any other with its time travel, ghosts, and Christmas magic all wrapped up in one wonderful film.

The Man Who Invented Christmas (2017)

This new movie is something that holiday lovers will be quite excited about. It tells us the story of how the legendary Charles Dickens dreamt up the well-beloved classic A Christmas Carol. Played by Dan Stevens, Dickens uses his imagination and passion for writing to craft the famous tale actually inspired by people he knew in real life. It is something of a dramatic biography of Charles Dickens but it is still a great holiday watch. The movie is currently in theaters and has received consistently good reviews from critics.
